Mum just revealed that she's got a growth in her right breast again. 1.2mm, and the one in the left has grown from 6mm to 9mm. She's going for the op on monday to remove both, and have a biopsy done on them as well. She did have one removed some time ago, now its back in the exact same spot. 1.2mm. That previous one was declared benign, but with my aunt a breast cancer survivor, you can't be too sure about these things. Of course everyone is hoping that this one is benign too, and i assured mum that, at her age, these things are common. They are, but i dunno how much i believe what i told her.
This is the one aspect of medicine i hate, and i do realise that in the path that i choose, i'm going to be doing this, and some things much worse, more often than other specialists. I guess you are never formally taught how to tell a patient that he or she is going to die a little too early. That no, even as a doctor, i can't do miracles and heal you. I'm sorry, but... Even worse are those times when you have to tell a patient's family that he or she didn't make it. And you wonder if there was more you could have done, something you didn't do, something you overlooked. I guess that's why males have that slight advantage over females in this. Males are just that little less emotional. To view and treat with detachement. Oh well...no point getting too worked up over this even before i take my first class in medical school.
Everything's gonna be alright.
